How to secure your Firefox browser

leave a comment

The first thing you should do is: install the NoScript plugin for Firefox.

JavaScript could be exploited to do some nasty things to your computer. Especially on unknown websites, JavaScript could be used to redirect the page, open another browser window (which may contain malicious code), etc.

With the NoScript plugin, JavaScript will be disabled on every website you visit unless you allow the script to be executed. This makes it impossible for malicious websites to mess with your computer. Needless to say, you should only allow trusted websites to execute JavaScript. Otherwise, don’t.

I’d also disable Java, since it is rarely used anyway and it has more access to your file system — which means more risk if it is exploited.

Lastly, check for updates periodically, at least once a week. Always use the latest stable version of Firefox and your plugins.

Disable Acrobat JavaScript on your Adobe PDF Reader

one comment

If you are using Adobe PDF Reader, there is one thing you must absolutely do if you care about security.

DISABLE ACROBAT JAVASCRIPT ON YOUR ADOBE READER!!

This is very important. Even though Adobe always patches security vulnerabilities in their product, sometimes the exploit comes first and your computer could be infected by some nasty virus targeting the exploit.

The JavaScript feature is rarely used anyway. You better disable it now:

  1. Open Adobe Reader
  2. On the menu bar, go to EditPreferences
  3. Go to the JavaScript tab
  4. Untick the “Enable Acrobat JavaScript” option
  5. Click OK.

Alternatively, you can use other software to read PDF files, e.g. Foxit Reader.

Keyloggers can be an invasion to your privacy. With a keylogger, ALL your typing will be recorded. Someone could install a key logger on your computer and then he will be able to find out EVERYTHING that you have ever typed on your keyboard.

The Weakest Link

leave a comment

First things first. I want to start this blog with the basic concept of security: the weakest link.

Let’s say you are using the latest stable version of Firefox. You have installed a firewall, an antivirus software, anti-spyware, etc. All the programs to secure your computer, periodically updated. They will protect your system/data from malicious attacks… or so you think.
